SLY GROG-SELLING.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin, last night. The hearing of the charges of sly grogselling at Tapanui was resumed to-day. James O’Dowd, who was charged with selling liquor on New Year’s Day, was convicted and fined .£4O and costs, to be recovered by distress, in default one month’s imprisonment without hard labour. ■ .
Mr Owen, who appeared for the prosecution, said hard labour would be preferable, but Mr Stratford, S.M., thought persons convicted of g.ucji an offence should not altogether lose'character by being set to work with ordinary' criminals.
Two informations against Pat McCann were withdrawn, the Crown Prosecutor saying bp had only, one witness, and he did not’think it prudent to proceed,
