The annual race meeting was held yesterday at Tolago Bay. The sky was overcast with clouds, but no rain fell. The gathering was fully representative; the majority, of course, were Natives ; but there were a good many station-holders present, with a fair attendance of ladies. Gisborne was represented by many well-known sports, and not a few ladies. The course was very heavy. The results were : Handicap Hurdle Race, of 35 sovs; second horse to recoive 5 sovs. from the stake. Over six flights of hurdles 3ft. bin. high. Ono and a-half miles. 102 Mr F. Rhodes’ Cronjc.by Hukatcrc— Missfire, syrs, 10.4, Banks .. • • I 20 Mr Turo’s Mangamahaki, by Emir ■ Boy, syrs, 9.0, Adams 2 Also started: 90 Contrabine 9.0. Contrabino ran off at the first hurdle, leaving Cronjo in command. The Hukatere gelding jumped badly at the next hurdle, but warming up to the work, showed much better form, and won easily. Time 3.17 3-5. Totalisator, £224; d)V., £1 19a. Maiden Hack Scurry, of 10 sovs. For all horses that have never won a race of any description. Minimum weight 7st 71b. Distance, half-mile. Iranui and Bona cut out tbo running, and at tho distance the latter looked all over a winner, but tho rider apparently mado too sure a thing of it, and Slapjack, making a brilliant dash in tho last few yards, won on tho post by a neck. A protest on the grounds that tho race was started at tho five-furlong post instead of the four, was dismissed. The totalisator investments wero impounded, ponding enquiry in regard to a protest that Slapjack lmd won a previous race. Flying Handicap, of 35 sovs. Second horse to receive 5 sovs. from tho stake. GeologUt and llangitoto wero soiatehcd. This was a very good race. At tho turn for homo Lady Raven was in command, but Moonraker had tho host of the run down tho straight, and won by half a length. Time 1.21; div. £9 ss. District Race Handicap,of 30 sovs.; second horse to receive 5 sovs. from the stake. Tho horse, which must be owned by the nominator, must have been owned and trained in tho district throe months prior to tho race. District : from East Capo to Wliangara. One mile. 70 Mr J. H. Uawa Stakes Handicap, of 50sovs. ; second horso to receive ssovs. from tho stake. Ono and a-quartor mile. 40 Mr G. Oman’s Hairtrigger, by Crackshot—l’unga, 7.8, Jones .. .. 1 11(1 Mr T. This was a grand race. The quartette came down tho straight in the even line of cavalry, sweeping along tho sward as if there was only ono horso moving. There was a most exciting finish, it being so close that only those in a lino with the judgo’s box could say what tho result was. The judge placed tho horsos as above, but Wilson, tho unplaced horso. was so oloso to the others, that many thought ho had won. Time, 2.18. Div., £6 ss. Handicap Hack Race, of 10 sovs. No liorse that is or lias been nominated for any raco at tho mooting othor than Hack Scurry, District Race, and Hnuiti Handicap, will bo allowed to compote as a hack. Ono mile. 127 Malcolm, 8.0, McNeil 1 47 Tryphena, 6.7, Dovery ... ... 2 4 Yacca, 7.4, Coghlan 3 This was another good race, but tho favorite soon went to tho front, and won easily. Tnpuhoro ooeupied apvomincut position throughout, and won easily by.lialf-a-length, Malcolm being fourth. Time 1.2 8-5 ; div. .£2 4s. Farewell Handicap, of 15 sovs ; one mile and a distance.
42 Wilson, Cudd 1 19 Hairfriggor, Griffiths 2 9 Blue Moon, McNeal 3 Cronje also started, but had no backers. It was almost dark when the race was run, and a good deal of money was shut out of the totalisator. Wilson won easily by a length. Time 2-1. Div., £1 12s. The sum of .£2,017 was put through the machine. Mr W. Holder admirably carried out the duties of Secretary. Mr Boland was most successful as starter.
HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, last night. Heavy rain fell yesterday, and as a result the course for to-day’s races of the Jockey Club is rather heavy.
