Turanga Church Services, Sunday next— Patutahi (with Holy Communion) 11, Ormond (with Holy Communion) 3, Karaka 7, Canon Pox; Waerenga-a-hika 3, Lay Reader. The Wairarapa Times is responsible for an extraordinary story which demands investigation as to its truth. It is to the effect that a young and sickly-looking man sent to tho manager of a sheep station, stated that he had injured himself handling heavy sheep, and would be glad of any light work. Out of pity he was taken on, and for several days appeared to enjoy to the full the luxury of a verandah chair. At last it was suggested that he should do some light work in the garden and saw some firewood, fifteen shillings a week being offered as payment, of course in addition to his-j keep. He did not say he would accept those terms, but he did some work, and promptly drew the pay. At noon on a Saturday he left work without leave, and adjourned to a public-house at an adjacent township. He turned up on Monday, but •was told that his services would no longer be required. He then demanded back pay at tho rate of £1 a week, and a week’s wage in lieu of notice. 'When the manager refused the man stated that he had been sent up country with a mate by the Labor Bureau, and told to get work at some station. without raising the question of wages. If they , did that * (this was the statement of the man) when they were paid off they could demand j£l a week, and if that were refused they were to “let the Bureau know."
