Dunedin, last night.

A fire broke out at 2.30 this morning in the chocolate and starch rooms connected with the Phoenix Confectionery Company, McLaggan-street. The outbreak was confined to the top storey of the front building. Tho chocolate and starch rooms were completely gutted. _ The insurances on the Phoenix factoryare : Boyal Exchange, Phoenix, Northern Union, South British, £IOOO each; Commercial Union, £ISOO ; North Queensland, £750 ; Alliance, Liverpool, £6OO ; Imperial, North British, Northern New Zealand, and Guardian, £SOO each ; Standard, £250 ; total, £IO,OOO.
