Half-mile Scurry. Minimum weight, 8.0. For horses that have never won a race exceeding £5 in value. First prize, £5 ; second prize, Bridle value £1 Is, presented by Messrs Primrose and

Leslie. 1 Shillawee ... ... ••• 1 Gingernut 2 Fifteen started. From a fair start Shillawee went to the front and was never headed, winning by half a length. Hospital Fund Face Handicap, 220 yards, First prize L2 2s, presented by Adair Bros., second prize, LI Is, presented by Mr J. W. Nolan. Mr Vincent Pyke 1 Mr J. Sheridan 2 Mr R. Cole 3 This was, perhaps, the most interesting race of the day. There were 400 entries, among the names being those of the Premier, Mr Hall-Jones, and Mr Carroll. There were a great many non-starters. Mr Pyke, with 125 yards start, went out a warm favorite, and fully justified the confidence placed in him. Mr J. W. Bright sacrificed his chance to take the favorite in hand. Mr Pyke jumped off with the report of the pistol, and Messrs Sheridan and Cole quickly showed in front of the others, with Mr Joyce fourth and Father Mulvihill fifth, and R. Little next, the following batch being headed by Messrs Webb and Henderson. _ The pace was made a clinker. Mr Pyke made a straight course, but Messrs Sheridan and Cole were wide of the mark, and thus Messrs Joyce and Zachariah were blocked, and Mr Cumining had no chance of getting through the crowd. Amidst great cheering, Mr Pyke won by a couple of feet, Mr Cole being beaten by a breast for second place, while Mr Joyce finished fourth, and the rest were cut off by the general public rushing the ground to congratulate the winner, whose victory was a very popular one. The handicapper made Mr Pyke give the Premier fifteen yards’ start, but, of course, Mr Seddon was an absentee. A match between the Premier and Mr Pyke would be a very interesting event. The Hon. J. Carroll was placed on scratch, but, on the running, he would not have had a hope, unless a dog ran across the track at a critical moment. The official time given was 10 3-5, but it is believed that the timekeepers were too excited to take the time accurately. One Mile Handicap. First prize, £lO ; second prize, £2 10s ; third prize, Pair of Trousers value 30s, presented by Messrs Sandlant and Co. W. Roderick, 130yds ... 1 P. Mullins, 35yds 2 T. Beatson, scr 3 a Also started : A. Coupcr 120yds, L. Richmond 128yds, W. Roderick 130yds, C. Trcmbath 150yds, R. McGillivray 150 yds, W. Sharp 180yds, G. Saunders 180 yds, W. Bougen 180yds. This was one of the most interesting races of tho day. Roderick started off at a great pace, Beatson and Mullions in hot pursuit. At the half-mile post Roderick still had a good lead, and running in fine stylo maintained it to the finish, winning by ton yards from Mullions, who was four yards in front of Beatson. All threo ran a great race, and the timo (4.81) is good proof of the pace tho race was run at. The win was a very popular one. Horse Jumping Competition. First prize, ,G 3 18s ; second prize, Bridle value ill Is, presented by Mr E. Williams ; third prize, 18s. Sereuada, Nolan 1 Bay Bell, McKenzie ... ... 2 Six competed, but tho jumping was not up to that of previous years, the two placed horses being many points ahead of their opponents. The ground had been marked off by Messrs J. Rosie and G. F. Henderson. Messrs Henderson and G. Wildish acted as markers to assist the starter.
