On Thursday evening, in the Church of England Sunday School, Kaiapoi, the Bishop of Melanesia gave an interesting lecture on life and customs in Melanesia. The lecture was illustrated by numerous limelight views. The Rev. J. Holland was in the chair, andat the close of the lecture, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to his Lordship. The native officers of the Indian Contingent received an extra allowance of a sovereign a day during their stay in the colonies, the non-commissioned officers 10s a day, and the. British officers a guinea a day.' '
