WATER AND DRAINAGE.
INTERVIEW WITH THE
ENGINEER.
Mr Mkstaykr arrived by the steamer yesterday morning, and met the Borough Council at 10 o’clock, there being present: The Mayor, and Councillors Nolan, Lewis, Kennedy, Harding, Johnston, Joyce, and
Jones. The Mayor introduced Mr Mestayer, and after some [discussion it was decided that the Engineer should make a start on tho drainage scheme. On being told that there was at present no drainage system in existence, he expressed himself pleased, as if he had to incorporate an old system, as was tho ease in Wellington,*it would cause a good deal of extra work and expense. He would, he said, inspect the borough,'and get the lay of the town. It was decided on the suggestion of the Mayor, that Captain Whiter, who had taken the levels, should be engaged to place his services and local knowledge at
the disposal of Mr Mestayer. It was also decided that he should accompany Mr Mestayer to inspect the various sources of water supply. The various suggested places are in the meantime to be considered, and those impracticable are to be struck off tho list. Mr Mestayer promised to again meet the Council before he left, and acquaint them with his first impressions and ideas as to what ought to bo done, but said his considered report would come lator. Or Joyce raised the question of the disposal of nightsoil, and said it might be as well to let Mr Mestayer know that they did not want, it thrown into the sea. Cr Johnston asked if it had not been decided that tho nightsoil should not be disposed of through the drainage system. The Mayor said that no actual decision had been arrived at. Cr Nolan said it would be for Mr Mestayer to report. Mr Mestayer said that ho would make suggestions in his report, which it would bo for the Council to consider and decide when they had all information before them.
