Cycling Notes.

A strange coincidence —Mr C. E. Brown, one of the prize winners in the recent Dunlop Name Competition, states that he was ono of the first to ride Dunlop tyres. He at the time resided in Dublin, and rode one of the first machines that were fitted with the now famous tyre.

Dusty spokes give a cycle an unsightly appearance, and are a cause of worry to many a cyclist who takes pride in his machine. Several English cycle firms have lately been experimenting with the object of preventing such rusting, and now one Birmingham firm announces the fact that 1 they have discovered a method that will prevent spokes rusting during the life of a machine. The new process gives ' the spokes a white aluminium finish, which is stated to be superior to nickel plating. According to the Brisbane Observer,* the Postmaster General of Queensland is considering the advisability of running a motor mail service to some of the outlying postal districts, which have at present to be covered by relays of coach horses. There is little doubt that the motor car will yet prove invaluable for mail workout here especially where long stretches of country have to be covered by tedious coach rides. The motor would certainly prove cheaper and more expeditious. Apropos of motors —the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade have decided to fit a motor to one of their fire reels, thus enabling quicker progress to outlying fires.
