SWIMMING

SUCCESS OF GISBORNITES,

We take the following from the Wanganui Chronicle’s report of the College Swimming Sports:— The Sports were a great success, for the weather was fine. Several records were broken. The Murphys were, as usual, very conspicuous. E. C. Murphy lowered the School records for the 100 yards and tlio'so yards, while R. K. Murphy accomplished the extraordinary distance of 238 feet in the long dive. There was a good sprinkling of humorous items, to allow the competitors to recover from their exertions.

100 yards.—E. C. Murphy 1, Borlaso 2, R. li. Murphy 3. Time 70 secs. Murphy swam splendidly, beating his previous School record by over a second. ' Long Dive. —E. Iv. Murphy (238 ft) 1, R. C. Murphy (208 ft) 2, Johnson (189 ft) 8. The previous School.record of 167 ft was held by E. K. Murphy. Unless tho New Zealand record of two years ago (228 ft) has since been beaten, Murphy’s dive establishes a Colonial record. In any case, it was a great performance for a schoolboy. Neat Headers, 60 points.—Hewitt (ma.), 58 points, 1; E. C. Murphy and Willock tied for second place with 57 points each. Hewitt dived well.

50 Yards. —R. C. Murphy 1, Borlasc 2, R. Iv. Murphy 3. Time 31 secs. Murphy again beat his previous record, this time bv 4-sth sec.

District Relay Race, 100 yards.—Gisborne team 1, Wanganui team 2, Hawke’s Bay team 3. Time 59 4-5 secs. Four boys represent each of the various towns or country districts of the colony, and swim 25 yards each. The Gisborne reps, (consisting this year of the Murphys, Johnson, and Seymour) have been unbeaten for some years.
