The absence of many troops in South Africa and China saves India 36 lakhs of. rupees during the current year. H.M.S. Phoebe has sailed to replace the Porpoise on the Australian station. It is now stated that Dr Thornton, late Bishop of Ballarat, has been appointed Assistant Bishop of Manchester. The steamer Somerfield,'sunk in the Elbe, has been re-floated.
Briggs, the cricketer, has had a serious relapse, and has been removod to an asylum.
Reuter’s agency reports that the American Government have despatched a strongly-worded note, in which they warned China that America would not acquiesce in any secret or soparate negotiations or cession of territory by any Power. The noto added that at the present moment any question of cession would be inopportune to a majority of the Powers interested. Russia, being foremost to take action, has approved of the American noto.
