LAWN TENNIS.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.

There avas a largo attendance at tho Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club’s courts on Saturday afternoon to witness the final for tho championship of tho three countios between Messrs A. W. Rees and W. J.

Barlow. The game resulted in a victory for Mr Barlow by 6—2, 6 —4, 6 —3, the best of five vantage sets. Tho contest created a good, deal of interest, ns both players arc good exponents of the game. Mr Rees has hitherto held the championship of the district, whilst Mr Barlow, who is a recent arrival from Canterbury, has hold a high position amongst the players thero. The scores are hardly a criterion of the play, as the spectators were rewarded with a good exhibition of the game, tho competitors being frequently applauded. Mr H. G. Watson attended to tho scor-

ing, and Mr Goo. Grant and Dr. Hughes officiated as line umpires. Afternoon tea was supplied by Miss Crawford and Miss Winnio Adair, and was fully appreciated by members and visitors.

After the match the cups were presented to the respective winners of the ladies’ and gentlemen’s championship, Mrs H. W. Watson and Mr W. J. Barlow, by Mrs Dr. Craig, wife of the president of the Club. Two gold medals have still to bo awarded to the two winners.

Thanks are due to Dr. Craig, who was chiefly responsible for tho promotion of the competitions, and for the furtherance of tho game in tho district.
