BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —There is a great deal in what has been said by your correspondent “ Gisborne.” But I would like to add the beaches to his list. If the Council and Beautifying Association apply their minds to the beautifying of the river bank —a splendid work for which I give them all credit, —the utilising of the reserves in the town itself, and the acquisition and improvement of the beaches, they will bo doing a grand work. The Kaiti beach, the beauty spot of the bay, is being converted into insanitary slums. Much as we may object to what has happened in regard to the Waikanae beach, there is the satisfaction of noting that the houses being erected are of a good order, and the new proprietors are men who will soon have the appearance of the place improved. Their occupation will certainly be a step ahead of the dreary neglect of the past. It seems to me that the scheme now in the wind will simply mean the pestering of people who always give, for the benefit of enriching wealthy native landlords.—l am, etc., Poverty,
