Christchurch is the only city in the colony possessing chemical engines. An epidemic of dysentery is being experienced in Masterton. Sheep stealing is still very prevalent on the West Coast. A Wanganui man is reported to have won .£2OOO over Taranaki winning double —Battleaxe and Okoairi. In view of the plague being in Australia the Borough Council should to-night appoint- a vigilance,committee, so that a mad scare will not be created later on, A Wellington firm took advantage of an early market on Advance, securing a good amount. They laid off .£SOOO, and then quoted 6 to 1. Ex-Constable Cullinanc, formerly of Wellington, who was kicked on the spine by a drunken man in Auckland, is in a precarious condition at Christchurch. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company have offered prizes amounting to £l4 14s for competition at the coining Winter Show of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Something like a thousand wild horses are said to have been shot down within the last few months in the Lake Taupo district. The commercial value of the animals is 2s 6d for a mane and tail. Jeremiah Mullanc, a light-hearted Irishman, of many experiences, and who created much fun at political meetings, died at the Hospital on Sunday night. Everybody liked “Jerry” and his droll ways.
It is estimated that the Federal-Com-mission now talcing evidence as to the desirableness or otherwise of New Zealand federating with Australia, will cost the colony A'sooo, which sum could be made ‘of great use by local bodies. Many people are under the impression that there exists in our midst a special body termed the Health Board. At the last meeting of the Borough Council, Cr. Jones pointed out that-such a body did not now exist, the duties in town devolving on the Borough Council. ’ Some fun was 'caused on Saturday evening by street preachers, said to be Mormons. When questions wore invited a sagacious greybeard tackled the speaker, aud as they say in racing parlance, there was a “ willing go.” The elder man had the crowd on his side, and as he made sally after sally—more humorous perhaps than conclusive —the crowd warmly cheered. It reminded one of a good-humored election caucus.
