ADVANCE PUTS UP A RECORD,
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Flemington, March 4. Advance on the tan covered a mile in 1.451, a record. Finland, on the tan, covered a mile in 1.49.1. Malstcr and Clean Sweep did the halfmile in 54. Flintlock did the milo in 1.49. BETTING ON AUSTRALIAN CUP. 7 to 2 Finland. 5 to 1 Advance. 10 to 1 Malstcr.
Melbourne, March 4. Owing to the rains little was done on the tracks on Sunday. Advance was out early, and cantered gaily on the tan, looking the better for Saturday’s race.
San I'Ytm, assisted by Iron lloop, went a mile and three-quarters on the sand in 8.14 j. There was little betting on the Australian Cup on Saturday night. Two thousand to 140 was accepted on San Fran. Finland is nominally favovitc at 7 to 2, Advance is ats to 1, and Malstcr at 10 to 2. Dreamland is also favored, and is likely to see short price. Lancaster broke down after Saturday’s race, and he will be unable to raco for some time. ADVANCE’S GREAT GALLOP. ACCOMPANIED BY BOREAS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received 0.12 p.m., March 4. Melbourne, March 4. In his record gallop on the tan this morning Advance waft accompanied by Boreas, who shaped well.
THE BETTING. Reading the card on the Australian Cup, Advance has been backed for .£I2OO at 7 to 2 ; hardening at 100 to lid, and 100 to 40 ; 1000 to 100 Malstcr. Finland is quoted at 100 to 10. Barbarossa has been backed for for .£OOO at 100 at b and 0 ; 1400 to 200 Dreamland. SCRATCHED HORSES. The scratchings for the Cup are Hurrah and Lancaster. THE AUSTRALIAN CUP. The Australian Clip, two miles and a quarter, is to be run at Flemington, today, and special interest attaches to it on account of the New Zealand representative Advance being among the contestants. AVe are among those who think that the Maorilnud crack was not seen at his best in the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday last, and we certainly expect to see him give a better account of himself to-day. 1 The son of Vanguard has the heaviest im- , post (0.7) with the exception of Paul l’ry, ; who has a pound more to carry, but the j distance is more to his liking. Advance has proved himself a sound stayer under i heavy weights, and will doubtless be very , troublesome to the Australian competitors. | Clean Sweep nod Finland are well treated f for this event, and will run well. The re- | suit of the race should be received in Gis- t borne shortly after live o’clock this even- , ing, and will he posted outside the Tunes s ollice. t
Levanter, who the cable-man stated had been sold to Mr .1. 11. Joel, is now owned by Major Edwardes. The Captivalor— Steel All gelding is a strong tip for the Liverpool Grand National with the Irish Brigade. The Irishmen generally hnvo something they are very sweet on in the National, and if all they say about Levanter is true, the ex-Aucklander must have a chance in the big cross-country race.
