THE CORONATION OATH.
OFFENSIVE EXPRESSIONS,

Ottawa, March 3,
The Canadian House of Commons, by 125 to 19, has adopted an address to the King, praying for the elimination from tho coronation oath of expressions offensive to the Catholics.
A recent cablegram stated that Cardinal Vaughan had ordered the Communion of Reparation to be celebrated in every church during the second Sunday in Lent, owing to the King’s statutory declaration at the opening of Parliament that the sacrifice of the Mass is superstitious and idolatrous. Bishop Grimes, on being asked if he could givo an explanation of that cable, said : “ The declaration against the Mass is necessarily looked upon by Catholics as a blasphemous oath ; and by many' Protestants as a needlessly offensive outrage, which in all probability will soon be abolished. The Communion of Reparation ordered will, therefore, most likely be a communion of atonement for the King’s taking of this oath, under compulsion of an Act which should bo, and no doubt soon will be, -repealed.”
