BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
A gexeii.il meeting of the Committee of the Beautifying Association was held last evening, when there were present Messrs DeLautour (in the chair), G. Darton (secretary), L. T. Symes, R. N. Jones, W. A. Barton, J. Townley, A. F. Kennedy, W. Pettie, W. D. Lysnar, and Dr Williams. Correspondence was read with regard to the improvement of portion; of the reserve next tho Court House, and also upon the question of a lock-gate on the railway bridge to improve the appearance of the Waikanae. A letter to Mr Carroll on this subject was read.
It was decided to allow the matter to stand over until the erection of the Post Office has been completed. The Finance Committee reported that the amount to the cre'dit of the Association was £37 19s Id, but the liabilities would absorb the whole of that amount. An effort would have to be made to get more money, otherwise they could uot possibly carry out more work. The Works’ Committee reported that the river bank had been hollowed (roughly) from Peel street bridge to Lowe street, a distance of seven chains. Before anything more could be done, it would be necessary for the Borough Council to continue the Lowe street drain, and to form the footpath on top of the slope. The soil on the bank was generally very light, and to ensure the grass taking evenly it would be necessary to spread some good soil over it, say about 50 loads. Since last meeting the trees in Peel street had been attended to and the nursery kept in good order. The trees were looking vory well indeed. The question of fencing the bank and saving grass should bo considered at once. It was decided to sow tho bank with poa-pratensis, and also to write to the Borough Council with regard to the continuation of the Lowe street drain.
Mr Symes mentioned that Mrs W. L. Roes bad approached him with regard to the improvement of the Recreation Ground. Mrs Rees was willing to get up a garden party, and raise tho sum of £25 towards the cost of the work.
Members thought that just at present there were more necossary works to be done.
One member suggested that the garden party might be held, and the proceeds devoted towards procuring seats. Mr Townley said that the Recreation Ground would be found to bo a very expensive place to improve. It had cost the Council a good deal of money already.
Dr Williams thought that tho money raised from the proposed garden party might bo devoted to draining the land. It- was decided to thank Mrs Rees for her offer, and inform her that as soon as the Borough Council would allow them facilities for improving the Domain, and funds permitted, they would bo willing to avail themselves of the same.
