Dunedin, last night.

At the Supreme Court, in the case of John Holland, charged with assaulting a girl under nine years of age, the jury retired at 11.85 a.m., and, being unable to at 4.85 p.m. were discharged.' The ease will be tried before a new jury tomorrow.

■ ' Samuel Flaherty, 25 years of age, was charged with a very bad assault on a girl 6f the age of four years at St. Clair. The defence was that the man was drunk, and that When he took drink he lost all control of himself, and did not know what he was doing. He said he remembered nothing of the circumstances. The jury returned a verdict 'of guilty. Sentence was passed of fifteen years’ hard labor, with two floggings of twenty-five strokes each.'
