San Francisco, Feb. 23. Tho steamer City Rio do Janeiro, from Honghong' and Yokohama, struck a ledge at tlio entrance to Golden Gate, San Francisco, during a fog. Tho crow numbered 140.
Tho stoamer carried 29 cabin and G 5 steerage passengers, tho latter including seven whites. Tho soa was smooth when the vessel struck. She foundered fifteen minutes after striking the ledge. Received 4.56 p.m., Feb. 24. London, Feb. 23. Ono hundred and fifty pooplo were drowned.

Details of the wreck show that Pilot Jordan, on ontoring tho Golden Gato, warned Captain AVard that it was unsafo to procood in tho fog, but tho advice was disregarded. AVlion tho steamer struck, tho ordor was shoutod for all to tako to the boats. Tho Chinese aboard howled frantically whon they got an idea of the danger. Tho womon scroamod piteously. Everybody scrambled for tho boats. Some pooplo jumped overboard. Captain Ward placod tho womon in boats manned partly by tho male passengors and partly by tho crow. Ono boat-load was swamped. Anothor boat was impaled on a spar, whilo thoso in it wore trying to escape tho suction from tho sinking stoamor. Tho captain locked himself in a stato-room, and sank with tho ship. Captain Iloclit, of tiro Gorman navy, savod hitnsolf with tho aid of a lifoLolt. Tho missing include Mr It. AVildmnn, tho Amoricnn Consul-Gonoral at Hongkong, and his wifo and two child ron.
