A correspondent writes as follows in regard to the Waimakariri electric lighting scheme : “ When the Niagara scheme was started there was no lack of scientific prophets against its success, and now we are told that after paying good dividends, electric energy is supplied at less cost thap cquld'be supplied by coal, even if coal wa§ absolutely costless at the boiler doors. But why be fiddling with 3000 horsepower ? The cost for 15,000 would be but very little more at the head works and turbines_.—-Call for tenders for that power, and our City Fathers will find that under £20,000 will give them the head works, turbines and buildings, and I believe £-20,000 would deliver the electric energy of the power less, say, 27) per cent, hi Christchurch, so- that tho ideal unsleeping, goodless, gasless, horsepower could bo sold at a [' trifle under the Niagara cost of 70s per year.” '• . ....
