POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S MEETING.

SECOND DAY.

Tub Poverty Bay Turf Club brought their Summer Meeting to a close at Makaraka yesterday. The attendance was large, and speculation was remarkably keen, the totalisator receipt being largely in excess of the previous year. The finishes in several events were very close, on two occasions there being only a few inches between the first and second horses. An excellent lunch was provided by Mr J. Erskinc. The Whataupoko Band, under Bandmaster Aston, played a number of selections during the afternoon, which served to enliven the proceedings. The following arc the details of the day’s racing:—

Stewards’ Handicap, of 50 sovs; 7 furlongs. 103 Mr E. C. Smith’s b m En Hide

Also started: 34 Wilson 7’7, 22 Mongonui C-12. From an even start Mongonui took command, and in company with Wilson led to the home turn, when En Ilakkore came through with a rush, followed by Warwick. The Hotchkiss mare had all the best of the run home, and won in good stylo by a length. Time 1.31 2-5. There were 305 investors on the machine, 103 on the winner, and the dividend was .02 13s.

At the first hurdle Albion fell, lcav : ’ig Cronjc and Hairtriggcr in command, whilst Pistol Grip was a length away. As they ran out of the straight the favorite went to the front, and making no mistakes won easily by three lengths. Time 2inin 57 2-5 sec. There wore 244 investors on tho machine, 123 on tho winner, and the dividend was HI 15s.

Second Flat Race Handicap, of 20 sovs; second horse 5 sovs. Seven furlongs. 102 Mr W. B. S. McDonald's b g Geologist, by Pounamu, 4yrs, 8,0, Ready ... ... ... ... 1 181 Mr A. Geologist was first away, and being well handled by Ready, held tho lead throughout. The Weaver put in a strong challenge in tho straight, but could not get on terms with tho Pounamu gelding, who won without the whip by a bare length. Time, 1.32 1-5. There wore 412 investors on tho machine, 102 on the winner, aid the dividend was H 3 12s.

Sunderland Stakes Handicap, of 80 sovs; second horse to receive 5 sovs from tho stake. Winner of the Stewards’ Handicap to carry slb penalty. One mile. 72 Mr D. Hepburn's Lady Raven, by Lord Raven—Duadlne, 7.0, Jones ... ... ... 1 20 Mr F. Holmes’ Heiress, 7.13, Fairbrother ... ... ... 2 57 Mr E. O’Neill’s Bonnie d’Eau, 8.12, O’Neill *3 Also started: 111 Donovan, 7 Wilson, 17 Moonraker. Wilson was first away, followed by Lady Raven and Heiress. In this order they ran to the home turn, where Wilson fell back, and the issue was left to Lady Haven and Heiress. This pair came on stride for stride, and as they passed the judgo’fjbox it was difficult to say which had won. The judge decided in favor of Lady Raven by a nose. A protest was entered against the winner on tho grounds of inconsistent running, but after hearing evidence tho stewards dismissed it. Time 1.44 4-sths. There were 290 investors on the machine, 72 being on tho winner, and the dividend was .03 12s.

dividend of .£8 15s was returned. Maiden Scurry, of 10 sovs; five furlongs 30 Mr Kawcnga’s Tawhina, Ready ... 1 27 Mr A. B. Newman’s A.8.N., Cudd 2 2 Slap Jack, Coghlau ... ... 3 Also started: 27 Rena, 21 Victorious.

An interesting finish was fought out between Tawhina and A.8.N., but Cudd. could not get his mount on terms. Time 1.5 2-5. Of the 113 investors on tho machine, 36 wore on the winner, and tho

dividend was 112 16s. Publicans’ Purse Handicap, of. 50sovs; live furlongs.
