SPORTING.

POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB,

SUMMER MEETING. FIRST DAY. A hot day with clouds of dust best described tho weather for tho opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s mooting, which took place at Makarnka yestorday. The Club were in a measure fortunate in having secured the day upon which tho Indian troops lauded in Gisborne for tho inauguration of their meeting, for this fact undoubtedly accounted for the record attendance at the races yesterday.. . An invitation was extended to tho visiting troops, and was accepted by them Tho Club are to be congratulated upon the manner in which they rose to the occasion in the matter of entertaining the visitors, all of whom speak in the highest praiso of the treatment they received. The stewards arranged with Mr Erskiue, who had tho grandstand luncheon rooms, to supply tho troops with a champagno luncheon, and the viands supplied were of a most recherche order. The wants of the public in regard to luncheon wore also well looked after by Mrs Erskiue, who is to be complimented upon the completeness of tho arrangements mado for catering for such a large gathering. The publicans’ booths were in charge of Messrs Martin and Craill, and did good business during the day. The secretarial duties wero ably performed by Mr Aislabic,, who had excellent assistance from Messrs Wyllic, clerk of scales; A. Pritchard, clerk of course; L. T. Symcs, treasurer; and J. Orr, J. Clark, R. Sherratt, C. White, J. Maynard, W. A. Hood, and J. A. Harding, stewards. Tho starters’ flag was wielded, in tho absence of Air H. Piper, by Air C. O’Connor, and that gentleman is to bo complimented upon tho manner in which lie got his fields away, the starts, with one exception, being all that could be desired. Tho totalisator was worked under the supervision of Alessrs Barrv and Ilogan, and tho dividends wero paid with the utmost promptitude. A good deal of money was shut out in several events through the races being started punctually to time, but although this means a loss to the Club, it is a matter of satisfaction to the public, as there is nothing so annoying as having the races half an hour or an hour Into. Investors thcmsolves will soon learn that thoy must make tlioir investments early, to suvo boing shut out.

The racing was perhaps tho best that lias boon seen in this district during tho past two years, and the day’s programme was run through without tho slightest hitch of any kind. The proceedings opened with the Alakauri Handicap, which brought out a field of four. Thistle was installed favorite, and she fully justified the confidence placed in her. Occupying a prominent position throughout, Ready brought his charge to tho front at the home turn, and coming on in line style the daughter of Strowan won easily by a length. Tho County Stakes brought out a field of five, and the winner turned up in Mr P. Alalone’s Craftsman, who took command at tho homo turn, and stalling off a strong challenge from Paria, won by two lengths. The win was a very popular one, and Air Alalono was heartily congratulated upon the success of his gelding. Tho Maiden Scurry brought out a big field, and was won by Ilinctapuariki, who paid the substantial dividend of £6 16s. The Turanga Stakes was tho event of tho day, and again five faced the starter. En Hakkore was favorito, but she found a tough nut to crack in Bonnie d’Eau, who, being well ridden by Fairbrother, defeated the Hotchkiss marc by a length. The Telephone Handicap was the boil-over of tho day, and was won by Air W. D. S. McDonald’s Geologist, who defeated Alongauui by a length The Hurdles had a field of three, and was won by Hairtrigger, who lias perhaps never been seen in the form he is at present. Hairtriggor’s victory was a distinct score for tho handicappor, Air Danvers, who has the laugh on his sido. The much-fancied Nukurau proved toq lliapy for liis opponents in tho Handicap Flat' race,' and won in good style by a length and a half. The Flying Handicap brought the day’s programme to a close, and there wore six startors, All wore well backed, Heiress being a slightly better favorite than Lady Raven, Tho winner, however, turned up in Warwick, who won comfortably by two lengths, and paid his admirers a dividend of £6 11s. TO-DAI'S RACES. The meeting will bo continued to-day, and the oxcellout acceptances received should provide a good day’s racing. , Stewards’ Handicap, of 50 sovs ; 7 furlongs.

Farewell Handicap, 25sovs., 7 furlongs,

Nominations : Donovan, Bonnie D‘Eau En Hakkore, Honors, Geologist, Corydon, Craftsman, Hinetapauriki.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS.

(By St.uilight.)

The Stewards’ Handicap has a field of seven, and all are likely to see the post. AVarwiclc appears to have all the best of the weights, and he will probably find his most dangerous opponent in En Hakkore. A field of five has accepted for the Hurdles, and Hairtrigger, on his running yesterday, should again secure a victory, with Pistol Grip and Cronje in second and third places. There are thirteen acceptors for the Second Flat Race Handicap, and speculation is likely to be very keen. My selection is, Geologist, Nukurau, and Thistle, in the order named. The Sunderland Stakes has a field, of seven, and all are well in upon the score of weights. Despite the fact that Donovan was only able to get into third position in the Turanga Stakes, I am still prepared to stand by him for this event. In the opinion of many keen judges of racing, AVright kept his charge too long in the background yesterday before making his effort, and was unable to get up in time. The distance will probably suit him better, and ho should take a lot of beating. Lady Raven and Bonnie d’Eau are also well in, and should run into places. Tho Rosoland Handicap has a look of uncertainty about it, and the winner, might turn up in Blue Moon, who has a nice handy weight. Red Rose, who is given as a “ good thing ” for this event, should be her nearest attendant.” A quartette arc engaged in tho Publican’s Purse, and Lady Raven and AVarwick should fight out an interesting finish. Mr .Hepburn’s mare will probably turn the tables ou the Napier horso.

For the Farewell a field of eight arc nominated, and in the event of Donovan not scoring in the Sunderland Stakes, he is sure to run well.

The first race starts at half-past iwclve.
