GISBORNE HORSES AND JOCKEYS,

A WORD FOR BUCHANAN.

(Special to Times). Auckland, last night.

The programme of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting was concluded this afternoon. On a narrow course like Takapuna, it'is virtually impossible for horses when rounding the sharp bends to keep a perfectly straight line of their own, and hence the cause of the alleged bumping in races where a big field are engaged. The public were disappointed in the running of the .Gisborneowned pony Ivan, which was ably ridden by “ Jim ” Buchanan, an ex-Gisbornite. Ivan was made the biggest favorite of the day, and notwithstanding Buchanan’s strenuous efforts to steer his mount to victory, he ouly gained second place after a hard-ridden race. J. Sceats, another Gisborne rider, was successful in riding Lady Avon to victory in the Borough Handicap this afternoon. This is Sceats’ second win at the summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club. Sceats will be remembered as having ridden Bluejacket to victory in the Auckland Cup during the past year, and last Saturday he proved victorious on Bluejacket in the Takapuna big handicap. Perhaps the most successful rider at the Takapuna Jockey Club meeting was Jas. Buchanan. He proved victorious in three races, gained second place four times, and had three thirds. This Gisborne boy is held in high estimation by the Auckland public, he being always possessed of fine gentlemanly qualities, both on and off the racecourse. The racing fraternity will not be far amiss in following up Buchanan’s mounts. Tait, the third Gisborne jockey engaged at the meeting,, was unsuccessful in gaining a victory.
