MATCH DAY AT WAIHUKA.
February 16th once more saw the annual match of the Knights of the Willow who
represent Motu and Waihuka come round. It was played close to the homestead, and friend climate, although much indisposed of late, deemed it advisable to show its bright side on that eventful day. There was a number of the fair sex present, each team being well represented. Some pretty costumes were noticed. The Motu team was ably captained by Mr H. Richmond, and the home one by Mr E. M. Hutchinson. Upon the spin of the coin Wa'huka won, and put the visitors in first. Messrs Patterson and Carron started the ball rolling, and following came E. Thomson and Clapham, who scored 14 and 15, and gave the fielders a fair lot of leather-hunting, but were disposed of by P. Hutchinson, who bowled with good style. Next came the captain, and he displayed his usual form, scoring 10, and not out. -At this stage of the game the bell went, and upon going up to the homestead all were met by Mrs and Misses Hutchinson, who, with their lavish hospitality, had made a great preparation. An adjournment was made, and. going to the trees by the lawn we found the tables spread with a repast which was fit for the King's coronation. After everyone had tried to finish the various dainties, but could not succeed, play was resumed, five men to go in. P, Hansen started, but was bowled by F. Hutchinson, who, with his brother, took the remaining stumps. First innings, Motu 68. E. Leggett’s bowling was not liked by any of the visitors. He seems to be able to put the leather just where he likes.
The home team going in Leggett Bros, opened up, E. Leggett scoring 5 for the first hit, and after giving the fielders a number of gallops, was bowled by E. Thomson for 40. Jimmie Kruse showed great form and made the score of the day, but ending sore in the back tendons, and was not in training. He was caught by Patterson, who was very good at holding the leather, and is an acquisition to the Motu. McCredie put up 37 before he was turned off by a smart ball from Hansen. The captain going in here chalked up 26, and played consistently, carrying his willow out with him. First innings 215. In second innings Motu had an up-hill game to fight, but very pluckily they did it, and made 67, Waihuka winning the match by one innings and 80 runs against good bowling at that. The wicket-keeping of 0. Leggett was very fine, very few balls passing him. After the match the home team invited the visitors to a dinner, which took place at Mr McCredie’s, Poututu, where, it is needless to say, we had a splendid go in, Mrs McCredie looking after us well, and it was no small contract. After dinner, we had a smoke concert, and it was surprising to see what talent came from amongst the hills and timber-forest of the Motu and district. I might say if the railway went there and the timber comes as fast as the talent, the rail would soon pay. One song was a parody on “ Sons of the Sea.” It really was very clever ; local hits, and was sung by E. M. Hutchinson. After a sit-down supper, to which every one did justico, we had a few more songs and terminated a very enjoyable day. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs McCredie and also to Frank Sherriff, who accompanied all at the piano. To use the words of our noted carriage - builder : “Go to Poututu.”
