An Old Murder.

A SOUTHERN SENSATION.

A Timaru telegram states: —The police aro instituting fresh enquiries into the death of a man supposed to be named John Sullivan, found dead on the road near Waitaki in January, 1895. Jeremiah M’Carthy, who was sentenced to seven years for incest last week, was arrested on a charge of murdering Sullivan, but the case was very weak, and Mr Justice Dcnniston advised the Grand Jury to throw out the bill, which they did. The police have no information to give, but it is presumed that the recent case against M’Carthy has re-opened the six-year-old case. The deceased had admitted that he called at M’Cartliy’s house one night, and was turned away. Next day he was seen lying on the road half a mile off, and the next day was found dead with a leg and his collarbone broken, and several bruises. M’Carthy was blamed by the coroner’s, jury at the inquest, because he had seen the man lying on the road. He spoke to him, and gave him no assistance. He said he did not know the man was so bad. Apparently the meeting was before the man received his physical injuries.
