BUSH FIRES.
HEAT WAVE IN AUSTRALIA. LOSS OF LIFE. MUCH DAMAGE DONE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, last night. A heat wave, accompanied by disastrous bush fires, has been experienced in many country districts. At Bankholme, besides a great destruction of other property, a number of residences were burned. A man named Mclntosh was burned to death, and several others were injured. At Condah the Roman Catholic Church and several houses were destroyed, and railway bridges and culverts were burned. At Warrnambool five houses were burned in the outskirts of the town. Wangarratta reports that the Sydney express had to run through a large area of burning country, the passengers being treated to a magnificent spectacle. At Scarsdale several houses were destroyed. In the Buninyong district a vast area of grass was burned, and much stock was lost. It is feared that some lives were also lost. . . In the Ballarat district some mining plants are threatened, and in other districts many outlying settlers have been burned out. Adelaide, last night. Destructive bush fires are raging in the Mount Pleasant district. Much grass and hundreds of sheep have been destroyed. The damage is estimated at ten thousand pounds.
