At a meeting of tho Nelson Chamber of Commerce last night Mr C. Y. Fell was olected Chairman and Mr S. Kirkpatrick Vice-Chairman.
At Dunedin yesterday John Hay, a commercial traveller, was charged with receiving orders for liquor in tho Clutha prohibition district. Decision reserved. At Dunedin yesterday two drapers were let off with fines of 5s each for keeping girls employed for longer than nine and a half hours. “■ Inadvertence ” was the excuse made and accepted.
At Port Chalmers yesterday Alexander Thompson and Carl Kunst pleaded not guilty to tho charge of murdering George Gibb, of the Otarama’s crew, and were remanded.
At the Anglican Synod last evening was devoted to a discussion on Maori missions, which wore described as being in a very parlous state. The report of the committee recommended the revival of public interest. The Bishop of Wellington said that there were 5000 Maoris in his diocese now scattered like sheep.
