GREAT BUSH FIRES.
FIVE PERSONS PERISH.
DEVASTATION OF HUNDREDS OF MILES. HOMELESS SETTLERS. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Received 1 a.m., Feb. 9. Sydney, last night. Extensive bush fires are raging in many parts of tho colony. Hundreds of square miles have been devastated. In the Riverina district many settlers have been burned out. Crops, stored wheat, machinery, and other property have been destroyed. A farmer named Smitch, who was out aftor stock, is missing. Received 1.15 a.m., Feb. 9. Melbourne, last night. Details of tho bush fires coming to hand show that the devastation is terrible. Some smaller townships have been almost destroyed. Hundreds of settlers arc homeless, and thousands of cattle and sheep have been burned to death. Five persons arc known to have perished, and these included two boys named McCallum, a boy named MacDonald, and a man named Kingswill. Tho A r oovillc homestead and wool sheds and machinery, and tho Deepdon property have been destroyed.
