Population Statistics.

Inhabitants, 810,536,

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The population of the colony on 31st December was estimated at 810,536, inclusive of 39,854 Maoris. At the end of 1899 the estimated population, exclusive of Maoris, was 756,505.

The births registered during the year 1900 numbered 19,546, and tho deaths 7,200, leaving an increase according to vital statistics of 12,346.

The arrivals in the colony during the year were 18,074, and the departures 16,243, leaving a balance of 1831. The total increase was accordingly 14,177, which, with the Maori population at the census of 1896, makes the population of the colony 810,536. The number of Chinese in the colony is estimated at 3077, including 34 females. The increase in the population during thr year has been at the rate of 1.87 per cent.

A comparison of the birth, death, and marriage rates for the colony for the last three years is as follows : Births.—lß9B, 25.74 per 1000; 1899, 25.12; 1900, 25.60. Deaths.—lß9B, 9.84 per 1000 ; 1899, 10.24 ; 1900, 9.43. Marriages.—lß9B, 6.91 per 1000 ; 1899, 7.28; 1900, 7.66.

The figures for 1900 are subject to re vision.
