A STARTLING AFFAIR AND SMART CAPTURE. [By Telegraph— Press Association.] Wanganui, last night. Nows from Waverley states that while Mr Hickson, who had been attending at the Waverley branch of the Bank of New South Wales, was proceeding to the station on Tuesday evening, two revolver shots were fired at him from behind. A policeman who was riding a bicycle 100 yards iu the rear, saw the shots fired, and pursued the inan. After a long search, he found him lying low in a small swamp. One shot went through Mr Hickson’s collar. The would-be assassin gives his name as James Burn, and is a well, dressed man of 23 or 24 years of ago. Tho revolver cartridges and the hat worn by accused were found-in the swamp. A LICENSEE FINED. The licensee of the Aramoho Refreshment Rooms was fined £5 and costs to-day for selling a bottle of whisky to be drunk off the premises, contrary to the conditions of the Licensing Act.
