Kaiti Road Board.

The monthly meeting of the Road Board was held yesterday morning. Present: Messrs. Mattliewson (Chairman), Harding, Bull, Wyllie, and Colebourne.

The Lands Department wrote stating the plan of a road about to be closed had been approved of. The Treasury notified the Board that the interest on the inscribed debt of the Board had been reduced to 44 per cent. Tho saving effected would amount to Ll 6 per annum. In reference to outstanding rates, the Clerk was instructed to prepare a list of defaulters, to be submitted to a special meeting of the Board on the 12th inst. Mr Brosnahan wrote requesting the Board to effect certain repairs to Lyell road. The letter gave rise to a discussion in reference to metalling and general maintenance of roads, and members expressed the opinion that for the want of funds further road works would have to be held over. The Chairman moved that the contractors be given notice of termination of contracts. It was with regret he was taking the action he did ; but the finances of the Board made such a step necessary. Mr Wyllie considered that where a few loads of metal were necessary to complete works in hand, it was a pity not to allow the contractors to proceed with the work. The Chan-man contended it was absolutely necessary to discontinue all works in hand to get the Board out of its present financial difficulties. Mr Harding suggested that one of the Board’s contractors should be asked to furnish an estimate of the cost of patching the roads. There were several incomplete, jobs that could be finished by a few loads of metal.

It was resolved to suspend all works until the Board had received a report as to what work was absolutely necessary to complete contracts in hand. Referring to another road, Mr Harding said he should like an estimate of the work required for repairing the road from the embankment to Mr Cox s residence. Whatever was done, he trusted would be of a permanent nature, even though only a very limited portion of the work were done.
