A little son of Mr E. N. Jones wasplaying on the Whataupoko bridge yesterday afternoon, and got into the way of a cyclist. The boy fared badly, and at first it was thought that he was seriously hurt, but on being taken home his first request was for his dinner, and he was soon able to rejoin his playmates. Mrs Sheppard, president of the National Council of Women, sent the following telegram to Lord Ranfurly : — “ My executive desires me to convey to your Excellency its deep sorrow at the passing away of the Queen. Gratitude mingles with our grief as we remember the noble ideal of a bright and brave womanhood which she has bequeathed to us.” Sir Charles HillTrcvor telegraphed to Mrs Sheppard, in reply : “ The Governor desires to express his “thanks to the National Council of the Women of New Zealand for then- loving message.” At the usual meeting of the Star of Gisborne Lodge, American Order of Oddfellows, held last evening, four members were initiated, and ten new members proposed. Mr C. East was appointed organist. It was agreed to send two delegates to the Rechabites’ social, and a resolution was also passed thanking the Rechabites for their kindly expressions of fraternal greeting and congratulation upon the formation of the Lodge. A motion was unanimously passed expressing the sorrow of the Lodge at the death of the Queen.
