WELLINGTON NEWS.
DEER CALVES,
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The Wellington Acclimatisation Society has decided to recommend the Government that the stag shooting season be opened on March Ist and close on April 30th. The Society has accepted an offer from Mr Cliirnside, the well-known sportsman at Weribee Park, Victoria, to supply a number of deer calves captured on his estate. DEFENCE DEPOT. The Minister of Public Works states that the premises at Mount Cook, previously’ intended for a prison, are not to be used as military' barracks, but as a temporary defence depot. GOOD NEWS. The High Commissioner has cabled the Acting-Premier that Private W. Paul and Corporal Seakill, both of the Second Contingent, suffering from gunshot wounds at Pretoria, are doing well. OUR BOYS OF THE SIXTH. The Commander of the Forces received the following cable to-day' from Colonel Banks, officer in charge of the Sixth Contingent, dated Sydney, sth inst. : “ Arrived here this morning. Men and horses very fit. Probably' arrive Capetown March sth. The Cornwall leaves Sydney to-morrow.” REMOVING ROCKS. Captain Falconor and the members of the Torpedo Corps who went to Kaikoura last month for the purpose of removing sunken rocks in the harbour have returned, having been very successful in their mission.
