OPOTIKI-GISBORNE MAIL.
Referring to this matter the Opotiki Herald makes the following remarks : The postal authorities have without donbt taken a wise step in establishing a weekly mail service betvveeu Opotiki and Gisborne. We have advocated the institution of. this service for many years, recognising as time rolled on the neccessity for such on account of the steady increase of settlement along this route. In our endeavors to bring this matter forward and to give it thaf prominence which it deserved we were cordially assisted by the Gisborne Telephone, and if our joint efforts have aided in bringing the matter to a satisfactory issue we trust we will be regarded as having performed our duty to the two centres, Gisborne and Opotiki, and the settlers on the line to whom the service will be a great convenience. The postal authorities, however, are moving cautiously, and are so much in doubt as to whether the service will pay or not, that they have only so far accepted a six months’ contract. With the postage reduced to one penny it may possibly, as far as direct returns are concerned, not turn out a financial success, but it will be a great help towards opening up a large area of country, and it is but reasonable to expect to see a mail service a few years ahead of the railway.
