YESTERDAY’S RACING. DETAILS OF THE CUP RACE. DEFEAT OF THE GISBORNE REPRESENTATIVE. THE COMPLETE RESULTS. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting was opened to-day, when there was betwee 0 four and five thousand people present. Tfio weather was very hot and oppressive, bet as the day wore on a light breeze tempered Uje Bait. In the chief event the withdrawal of Boreas and Ideal leij.e&ffi stable with a single representative, and J. D. Ormond’s champion racehorse Renown was installed a warm favorite, and quite justified the confidence placed in him, for after holding a nice handy position through the race, he shot out a furlong and a half from home, and making hacks of his opponents, won with easeln the fastest time yet recorded in New Zealand for the distance.

In both the races for two-year-olds Mr G. G. Stead’s representatives—Menschikoff in the Wellesley Stakes, and Cruciform in the Nursery Handicap—easily accounted for their opponents, but only returned small payments •to their supporters. Speculation was brisk, and the sum of (316,743 was handled during the day, as against £14,964 on the first day of last year. The results were as under

Melwood was the first away, closely followed by Magnificent and Spider, but after going a couple of furlongs the leader was steadied, and Spider and Magnificent carried on the running, with Melwood, Phooka, and Perfection as second division a length in the rear. Spider was the first to make the turn for ‘home, with Magnificent, Phooka, and Melwood handy. Once their heads were turned for home Melwood shot to the front and won without effort by a length and a half, Magnificent a length from Phooka. Time, lmin 44sec. Totalisator, £1842. Div., £4 lls. When the barrier was lifted the field moved off in a line with the exception of Kahuwai, who was left half a dozen lengths in the rear. Tortulla’s colors were the first to show prominently in the front, with Renown alongside of her, then came Materoa and Skobeloff. Tortulla showed the way down the straight and passed the stand a length in front of Renown and Materoa, with Paladin next, and Kahuwai, who had raced up to her field, fifth. Much the same order prevailed going out of the straight except that Skobeloff had replaced Paladin in fourth position, and the latter at once began to fall to rear. All along the back stretch Tortulla was in front, with Materoa on her quarters. Renown, on whom Davis had a strong hold, was next. Paladin at this time was quite ten lengths away from the front leader and was whipping. Nearing the mile post Materoa raced up to Tortulla, and this pair led Renown past the bend by a length, while Coeur de Lion began to move nearer to the leaders, and Paladin was seen coming again approaching straight the pace began to tell on the leaders, and Renown here shot past them as if out of a gun, amidst shouts of “ The favorite wins.” Coeur de Lion and Paladin also passed the fast-tiring mares, but were never able to extend Mr Ormond’s colt, who won easily by three lengths. A slashing set-to under the whip took place for second place, and the judge was unable to separate Coeur de Lion and Paladin. Materoa and Palaver were fifth, Tortulla sixth, Skobeleff seventh, Kahuwai, pulling up, last. Time, 2min 35 2-ssec. Totalisator, £3707. Div., £2 4s. Meteor was left at the post, and Menschikoff, getting well away, completely slipped his field and won easily by six lengths. Indian Queen, under the whip, passed Windwhistle at half distance from home. Time, 49seo. Totalisator, £llO3. Div., £1 9s.

President’s Handicap, of 150 sovs; 1 mile 1 furlong.

Prom a pretty start Strathnairn and Scottish Minstrel led the way out of the straight, but the latter immediately gave' way to Queen’s Guard, Cameo lying fourth. Opposite the stand Strathnairn was a length in front of the grey mare, with'Scottish Minstrel and Cameo together a couple of lengths away. Rounding into the straight Strathnairn gave way to Queen’s Guard, and at the distance the latter looked all over a winner, but was immediately tackled by Cameo, who came on full of running, and won somewhat easily by a length. When the horses turned into the straight Dartmoor, Ngatahuia,Waterford and Art Jewel were bunched in tho lead, and half way down the straight Dartmoor had settled the others, but here Conspirer came on the scene, and a fierce struggle resulted in a head victory for the latter. This race needs but little description. Cruciform jumped away with the lead, and though he was joined by Red Gauntlet for a furlong, drew away again in the straight and won by four or five lengths. Rere, under the whip, struggled on, and within fifty yards of the post headed Red Gauntlet, and gained second place. Time, lmin 2.2 sth sec. Totalisator, £1674. Div., £ll6s.

From a good start Okoari was first to move, but once the horses were fairly in stride Blazer took oharge and galloped in great style.
