Presentation of Medals.
The popular proprietor of 1 the Albion Club Hotel, Sir T. 3teele, had a surprise in store last night for members of the rowing fraternity, He had promised medals for the winners of the trial fours of the Gisborne Rowing Club, and for the presentation of the medals a pleasant little gathering was organised. The members of the crews who rowed in the final were invited to a dinner, and after justice had been done to a first-class spread, an adjournment was made to the spoial hall, where musio, mirth, and melody was the order of the evening. The winning crew, who were present, were—Slessrs W. Duggan (str), R. Davidson, H. Humphries, and H. Garrett, the second crew, also present, being Messrs L. Sherriff (str), E. H. O’Meara, R. Drummond, and M.- Craig. Mr Noble Campbell was present an the representative of the club’s committee. During the evening the medals were presented by Mr Steele, who said that he had always taken great interest in manly exercises, and that it was a pleasure to him to do anything he could to encourage rowing. These medals, he was satisfied, had induced a very strong'competition, and he was highly pleased with the way the races had been contested, tho recipients of the medals being fully entitled to them. Mr Duggan replied on behalf of the crew, thanking the donor for the handsome gifts, and for the way he had endeavored to rouse enthusiasm in rowing matters; that the action was fully appreciated was shown by the keenness of the competition, his crew only gaining victory after a very hard struggle. The medals are of very handsome design. The cox of the winning crew, M. Doyle, was presented with a medal by the members of the. crew. The gathering passed ofi very pleasantly, and concluded with a toast to the health of Mr and Mrs Steele. s
