THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT. DETERMINED ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] I Christchurch, last night. At the bowling tournament to-day both greens were occupied with a series of matches between the North and South Islands. Tho conditions of the contest were ten rinks a’.side, three matches, the aggregate scores of the three to be counted.. The first game was won by the South Island with a majority of 45 points. In the second game the South Island won by 27 points, and the third ended in a tie. The match thus ended in a win for the ‘South Island by 72 points. Mr J. Paul, of New Plymouth, captained the North toam, and Mr H. J. Raphael, of Christchurch, the South team. The weather was perfect, and a large crowd of spectators watched the different games. Mr Alexander Innes McGregor, Mayor of Akaroa, and member of the House of Representatives from 1887 to 1890, died yesterday. A married woman named Smith was brought up at the Magistrate’s Court to-day and charged with attempted suioide, and bound over for six months in a sum of £SO. It appeared she had had some liquor, and her husband threatened that he would not live with her if she continued to drink. This weighed on her mind, and she took a dose of spirits of salts.
