The Summer School is holding a session at Bowral, somewhat on the lines of the famous Chantaqua meeting. Representatives from all parts of the Commonwealth and New Zealand are present. A woman named Macdonald, at Alexandria, poisoned her baby with phosphorus and took the same compound herself. She jumped from a balcony. The child is dead, and the woman still living. Domestic worries were the cause.
There are fifteen hundred applications for the new contingent for the Cape. Captain Cox, who has just returned by the Orient, has offered his services. The Victorian force will consist of 504 officers and men.
Colonel Price has again offered his services for South Africa. South Australia’s contingent comprises 240 officers and men. Melbourne, Jan. 16.
The Government have cabled that one hundred young men have offered to join Tullibardine’s Scotoh Horse. The Government take no responsibility in this matter beyond undertaking the medical examination. Adelaide, Jan. 16.
Rear-Admiral Beaumont has arrived. His Vice-Admiral’s promotion is due in two years, which will probably be the length of his service on the Australian station. Hobart, January 16.
Mr Lewis, in an interview, says if Sir Philip Fysh is elected for the Federal Parliament he will have the position of eighth Minister in the Federal Cabinet.
