ROWING.
Is the rowing contests last night for the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s handicap double soulls, great interest was taken, the events being watched by many spectators. The first heat was between J. Webb and J. Parker, scr, versus J. Harneld and G. Brown, 12seo. The latter, the-limit men, made good use of their handicap, and probably would never have been caught had not Brown’s oar fouled in the mud, the blade being broken. Webb and Parker then gradually gained on tho leadors, and a most exciting finish was made of the race, AVebb and Parker just winning on the post by the final stroke, which put them a couple of feet in front. ■ The next heat was D. West and J. Newton, fiseo, versus H. Burns and J. Smith, lOsec. Tho latter made the most of their four seconds start, and led to the footbridge, where West and Newton were within half a length of the leaders. At the jetty the crews wero level, but from this out AVest and Newton gradually forged ahead, and despite the efforts of Burns and Smith;'won by a length and a half. Only two heats could - be rowed, the state of tho tide preventing any more being got off. To-night the two final heats of the first round will be rowed, the crews being F. Fox and J. Glennie, 4sec, versus Arch. Kirk and J. Muir, Bsee: A. W. Kirk and AV. Roderick, 6soc, versus A. Russell and R. Kellett, Bsec. Alter these events the drawing for the second round will take plane, and the crews’names will be published in to-morrow’s Times.
