THE AUCKLAND FIRE.

VERY SUDDEN OUTBREAK.

[by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, last night. Further enquiry regarding the fire in Customs street shows that the fire was discovered very soon after the actual outbreak. There was no sign of fire at ten minutes to four, when a cabman drove past the buildings, but a few minutes later the nightwatchman, with two constables, noticed a smell of burning. This they traced to Bond and Bell’s buildings, through the ground floor of which a faint gleam was now showing. The delay which ensued at the telephones, caused by the failure of the Central Exchange to respond, is now being enquired into.
