THE EX-CHAMPION BEATS THE
VICTORIAN,
[BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Auckland, last night.
Two interesting lawn tennis matches were_ played yesterday. J. R- Hooper, the ex champion, beat S. F. Diddams, of Victoria, the scores being—6.2.2.6.8.6.6.3. Peacock and Parker beat Hooper and Diddams—--6.2.6.1.2.6.4.6.6.2. There was aflarge attendance, and great interest was shown in the matches.
On Thursday Mr Diddams beat Mr Hooper by three sets to two. In Christchurch Diddams was beaten by Collins, and the latter in turn succumbed to both Peacock and Parker. Therefore the win of Mr Hooper on Saturday shows that tennis is quite as uncertain as many other games. Messrs Peacock and Parker, who won the exhibition doubles, are the New Zealand champions. Miss Nunnely, who has held the blue ribbon of ladies’ tennis in New Zealand since she arrived in the colony in 1895, is now only asked to play against the other best player each year.
