Death of Mr David Nolan.
[GISBORNE TIMES SPECIAL.] Auckland, Saturday. The Auckland Herald makes the following reference to the death of Mr David Nolan, father of Mr J. W. Nolan, of Gisborne “ Yesterday an old and esteemed Auckland citizen passed away in the person of Mr David Nolan, sen., who died at his late residence, “Tutuila,” Ellerslie, shortly before noon. For some time past the deceased gentleman, who was 72 years of age, had been suffering from an affection of the spine, and it was this that caused his death. Mr Nolan, who was a son of the late Mr Bobert Howard Nolan, of Londonderry, Ireland, was born in 1828, and was educated at Doyle College. On leaving school, at the age of 16, he joined one of the Green ships, bound for India, as a midshipman, and remained in the service until 1852, after which he came on to Melbourne, and thence to Sydney, where he resided for many years. He arrived in Auckland in 1805, and a few years later joined the late Mr W. Hunter as partner in the business of woolbroking, auctioneering, and stock and commission agents, the firm being known under the style of Hunter and Nolan. The deceased continued to take an active interest in the business until February of last year, whon it was acquired by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, having then grown to such an extent that in addition to the central premises at Epsom and Durham street, yards have been established at Pukekohe,' Waiuku, and recently Tuakau. Mr Nolan’s many sterling qualities, his integrity as a business man, and his uniform courtesy, made him many and lasting friends, and though he did not take an active part in political or publio matters, be was widely known and respected by all with whom he camo in contact during his long residence in Auckland. Ho was a member of the Anglican Diocesan Synod, and took a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the Church, being for many years superintendent of St. Matthew s Sundaysohool, and thon on his removal to Ellerslie to live, occupied a similar post at Christ a Church, continuing to aot as superintendent up to the time of Ins death. Deceased was instrumental in founding the Ellerslie Church, and providing the vicarage, and throughout held the position of churchwarden. He also interested himself in matters affecting the welfare of the district in which ho rosided, being for many years Chairman of tho School Committee, and Chairman of the Bemuora Boad Board. Mr Nolan was twico married, and leaves six sons and five daughters to mourn their loss, the former including Messrs It. H. Nolan (Nolan, Tonks and Co., Hawora), .Tas. W. Nolan (solicitor, Gisborne), D. B. Nolan (Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Wellington), H. 0. Nolan (New Zoaland Loan and Mercantile Agency Company), and L. Nolan (A. Clark and Sons, Gisborne branch), When the news of Mr Nolan’s death became known in town, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company closed tho doors of the Durham Yards, and lowered tho flag on the Queen-street promises to half-mast as a token of respect to deceased. Tho interment will be private.
