Mr Barton wired to the ActingPremier, in reply to tho roquest that Tasmania be allotted a portfolio in tho Federal Cabinet, that should the necessity arise for creating an eighth portfolio Tasmania will receive special consideration.

The "War Office has cabled stating that it is now supplying the oat requirements in England. There are already over 10,000 applications for old age pensions. Sydney, yesterday. The Earl of Hopetoun has forwarded to the responsible Federal Minister a message expressing his high appreciation of the display of the troops at last Thursday’s review. Tho New South Wales Colonial Secretary has sent letters to the heads of the military departments complimenting and thanking them for the successful manner in which they performed their duties and assisted Government celebrations.
During the week an interstate conference of public accountants will bo held, including New Zealand representatives. Five and a half million tram fares were collected for the fortnight ended January 5, representing £43,000. Bkisbane, January 9. The Queensland proportion of tho new South African contingent will be 300.
