[Per Press Association.] Wellington, last night. Mr T« E. Donne, District Traffic Manager of the Auckland Railways, is the officer selected by the Government to direct from Wellington the tourist traffic of the colony. An Auckland business man who was offered the position of Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department, finds ho cannot take it up. Mr Ward is now considering the claims of other candidates. Sir Alfred Milner cables to the Government that Withers, of the New Zealand Contingent, who hails from Whangamata, Auckland, died of enteric at Johannesburg on the sth. Mr Ward cabled to Mr Seddon suggesting that he should return from Australia in time to see the Sixth Contingent off at Auckland about the 30th. If he cannot, Mr Ward will go to Auckland himself. For the Sixth Contingent 200 men are now in camp, the Gisborne, Napier, and Wanganui sections of 15 men each arriving last night, and the remainder of the Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland sections this morning. Christchurch, last night. Seven Burnham Industrial School boys have just shipped on the barque Auriga and steamer "Werneth- Hall, which are leaving shortly for Durban. They are to be trained as sailors. Mangaweka, last night. Another raid was made by the police at Taihape last night, when a billiard room occupied by Thos. Lee was searched. A number of bottles of bottles of liquor were seized. This is the same premises as were recently occupied by Lyons, now serving a time for sly grog-selling. Dunedin, last night. The Invercargill section of the Sixth Contingent had an enthusiastic sendoff this morning. Their fine physique made a distinctly good impression, They are in charge of Sergt. Harold Smith, of the First Contingent, who is returning to South Africa. . The men were addressed by Major Webb and Rev. Ronaldson. At the station a big crowd cheered lustily as the train drew out. Hawera, last night. At the inquest on Percival Waite, a youth killed by . being thrown from a trap on the. Noonan road, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
