Mr G. R. Wyllie hoa returnod from Rotorua, and looks much Improved in health by his trip. Judge Bathara returned to Gisborne by the Zealandia yesterday, after a few days stay in Wellington. Mr W. J. Jamison, master of.the Tiniroto school (which has been gaining such a high reputation in the education district), was in town last week. Mr McPherson, general manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Company, was a through passenger by tho Zealandia yesterday morning.
" Mr H. *J. Byers, of “the firm of Donald Mclnnes and Co., shipping agents at Adelaide, who arrived in Gisborne a few days back, proceeded inland for two weeks. Mr and Mrs Vernon Willeston and Mrs J. A Shand left Gisborne on Saturday for Mr Bailey’s delightful seaside resort at Tatapouri, where they intend staying for a week or so. "Banjo” Paterson, the well-known lecturer and war correspondent, left for Napier per Waihora on Saturday evening. He proceeds to Hastings, and lectures there first, subsequently returning to Napier. Master Whinray was the junior who took Jbo first round on Gisborne’s midnight telegraph service, the operator being Mr _F. Pielsd. The " copy ” supplied was beautiful, and the messages were promptly delivered. We have pleasure in testifying to such a satisfactory inauguration of the midnight service. Among New Zealanders holding positions at the seat of war are —Peters, of Wellington, stationmaster near Johannesburg; Fraser, formerly of Government Insurance Department, now clerk to the ration department, Johannesburg; Tucker, formerly of postal ■department, now shorthand writer m railway ■department.
