Dunedin, yesterday. An enquiry into the case of Gustof Wahlberg opened at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Mahlberg was a seaman on the ship Ziol, and deserted on November 21st. He was arrested and sent back to the ship. He fell overboard, and was drowned off the Heads on the day of sailing. His friends asserted that the man was unfit to send) to sea. The Star suggested an enquiry, whioh is being held. The evidence showed that the captain gave instruction to allow no one aboard, but if anyone attempted they were to be shot in the leg. A doctor who wanted to see Wahlberg was therefore refused admission when he came alongside. Witness, however, stated that everything possible had been done to save Wahlberg. The enquiry was adjourned until the arrival of the Ziol in port.
Wellington, last night. If the Dunedin oitizens decide as suggested to defer further receptions to returning troopers till the arrival of Robin’s party, Mr Ward will order the Orient to come direct to Wellington. In that case she may be expected about the time of sailing of the Sixth Contingent. At the Conference of the Educational Institute the balance-sheet showed £438 to the credit of Legal Defences Fund. Recommendations of the committee, declaring that in. past the syllabus, ha 3 been overloaded with arithmetic, and that work of sixth standard ought to be distributed over a seventh standard, was adopted. , _ Christchurch, last night, The Conciliation Board is meeting to-day to hear the dispute of the Press Company and Lyttelton Times Company and the Canterbury Typographical Union. The employers ask that the Wellington award of the Arbitration Court be made to apply to the Canterbury Union, and ask' that the rates be raised to 3|d per thousand for linotype operators. Messrs Geo. Fenwick (Otago Daily Times) and J. C. Wilkin (Lyttelton Times) represent employers.
