THE SIXTH CONTINGENT.

OFFRS POURING IN. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. The Government has decided that the Sixth Contingent shall consist of 500 men trade up as follows : Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland 105 each, Wanganui 20, Nelson, New Plymouth, NaDier, and Gisborne 15 each. The number enrolled in all parts of the colony is 1308, out of over 2000 applications. A steamer of 6000 tons, belonging to an English firm, which was used by ono of the Australian colonies as a troopship, has been chartered to carry the Sixth Contingent. The name, however, has not yet been disclosed. She is expected to leave Wellington on Sunday, the 20th, and Auckland on the 25th.

Auckland, last night. Over one hundred men have been approved of as suitable for tho Sixth Contingent. The authorities are now awaiting instructions from Wellington as to the number of the Auckland detachment. Fresh offers arc coming in daily. Among those who have offered their services is Captain Blackmore, a lieutenant of the 49th Begiment, and a brother of the late novelist.

Napier, last night.

Altogether seventy applications have been received for enrolment in the Sixth Contingent.-. JThirtydhree passed the preliminary tests. The list has now closed.

The total number who have applied for enlistment in the Sixth Contingent is 207.

THE GISBORNE ME

Major McCredie yesterday afternoon received instructions from Lieutenant Colonel Porter to send a draft of fifteen members for the Sixth Contingent from this district. The men will be sent to Napier by steamer, and thence on by train to Wellington. The Gisborne candidates were put through riding tests yesterday morning, Major McCredie and Captain Winter conducting the tests, while Sergeant Heliier Evans assistsd. Most Of the horses refused the tiff umps, but the judges had their eyes more on the riders than on the style of the horses, and it was the riding that was judged. Sergeant Thomas Allen, Corporal Norman Leslie, and Troopers Mcßurney, McKinley, and A. Law, being trained members of the Mounted Bifles, have been accepted, and tho following 25 candidates have passed the tost: —Barry, Buckley, Bushnell, Breingan, K. Campbell, Denny, A. DeLautour, Fraser, Guilford, Glass, Gray, Grayson, E. C. Hurrey, I Hurrey, Hanlon, Humphreys, James Moore, O’Neil, McGough, Ogden, Biehardson, Skeet, Teasdale, and Hesketh.
