POVERTY BAY V. UNITED (NAPIER). BIG SCORING BY LUDBROOK AND GIBSON. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] (■V VICTORIA V. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, Jan. 2. Victoria in their second innings scored 446, McAlister 74 being the highest scorer. South Australia in their second innings have lost five wickets for 139. Bailey 43, Hack 25, Gifien 22.

Napier, last night.

On the first innings the Poverty Bay cricketers lost to-day’s match with United by 44 runs, but had the game been played out the probability is that the result would have been reversed, for when the play ceased at 6 o’clock their score in the second effort stood at one for 166. Ludbrook and Gibson were responsible for this capital score, and the latter had very hard luck in losing his wicket when only wanting two to complete his century. He indulged in some especially hard hitting, and his score included 15 fours and 9 threes. Ludbrook (not out 57) gave a fine display of all-round cricket, reminding us of his best days in interprovincial cricket before his removal to Gisborne. As regards the first innings, Massey’s 24 was the result of patient cricket, and he succumbed to a splendid catch at deep mid-off. The pitch suited Hughes’ bowling, and he bagged seven of the wickets. Lusk’s 61 was a good innings, but marred by one or two chances, and Balfour’s 24 was highly creditable for so young a player. To-morrow the visitors meet a combined team. [Own Correspondent.] United beat Gisborne by 43 rnns on tho first innings. Gisborne made 113, Massey 24, Hussey 19, and Gibson 19 being the highest scorei'3 on a slow wicket. United made 157, Lusk 61. Gisborne in the second innings made a brilliant stand, and only one wicket fell for IGB. Gibson was bowled for a magnificent innings of 98, and Ludbrook was 57 (not out). The one day matches are considered unsatisfactory, as Gisborne would have probably won both if played out. Rees and Gibson were the principal bowlers for Gisborne.
