NEW YEAR’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

A most successful sports gathering was held at Tologa Bay on New Year’s Bay. Mr E. Boland acted as starter, and got the fields away to excellent starts, especially in the horse-racing events. A trip was made by the launch Irnnui, and tho vessel was well patronised ; she also made a trip to the Cave, and took over a hundred excursionists. The following are the results of the sports: — Maiden Face; Ist prize £l, 2nd lady’s hunting crop: James Mulligan 1, Norman Spence 2. Seven started, the event being a grand one, the winner breasting the tape with a yard to the good. Boys’ Handicap, under 1G: B. Holder 1, H. Temple 2. There wero seven starters, and a fine finish resulted. The winner, being a small boy, was given a good handicap, and just managed to beat tho other Uawa Handicap, 100yds; 1st I prize £2 10s, 2nd £1: N. McKay 1, Baniera 2. Eight started, and there was a close finish. Hack Face; Ist prize £4, with a sweepstake of 4s each to be divided between first and second horse: H. Martin’s Wong Wong I. There were five starters. Sack Race: F. Grace 1, Haera 2. Seven started, but tho winner had an easy victory. District Pony Bnce; Ist prize £2, 2nd 10s; W. McNeil’s Shela 1, H. Matenga’s Nana 2, Snowball’s Hauiti 3. This was a very good race. Hauiti Handicap, 220yds : Ist prize £2, 2nd 15s: N. Spence 1, A. J. Anderson 2. Six started. Won by two yards. Cigar Face ; prize £1 : A. Eangiuia 1. Eighteen started. Won easily. Open Handicap, 150yds ; Ist prize 30s: Maati 1, W. McNeil 2. Six started. Leaping Match: W. McNeil’s Maori Boy 1, Fitzgerald’s Domino 2. There were 28 entries, and Messrs W- Beeves and A. A. Moore acted ns judges. The jumpers were a very indifferent lot. only a few of them showing any style in negotiating the obstacles.

Thread-the-Needle Race; A. Eangiuia 1. Tilting-at-the-Eing; Ist prize £1: A. Thatcher 1, with five rings; McKenzie 2, with three rings. There was the fine field of thirty for this event.
