BID BY PREMIER

PREVENT_ STRIKE GAS & POWER WORKERS WAGE RISE OFFERED (11 a.m.) PARIS. May 27. The Premier, M, Ramadier. broadcast an urgent appeal to workers in the nationalised gas’ and electricity companies not to strike for a wage increase at midnight tonight, as threatened. M. Ramadier said: “You are no longer serving an owner. You are directly serving the nation. Do your duty and the Government will do its duty.” ~ , He added that the strike would be a blow against the nation. Later, a gas and electricity union official, despite M. Ramadier’s appeal, said there would be no change in the gas and electricity workers’ decision to strike. The official said: “M. Ramadier’s appeal did not mention the demands which the workers had tabled. It is consequently impossible for the union to alter its decision.” Later again, the Premier’s spokesman said the Government was willing to offer the workers a compromise of 8.5 per cent, wage increase to avert the threatened strike in utility plants.
