COUPON COLLECTION
REDUCTION IN NUMBER CLOSING OF SCHOOLS . The closing of district schools for the term holidays has apparently had the effect of reducing the number of meat and butter coupons handed to the Gisborne committee of the food fo? ® rl " tain campaign. Last week a slight decrease was" shown in the number of coupons surrendered, but. the total for the month has been maintained at a consistently high level. The silent street appeal in the business area last Friday produced 240 meat coupons, which is also the lowest figure for many years. A great deal of interest is still being taken in the campaign to send more, food to Britain, and many private individuals in the district still endeavour to collect as many coupons as possible. Last week Mr. V. C. R. Mitford handed in 501 meat coupons to the postmaster at Gisborne, while Canon A F Hall surrendered 1633 meat coupons collected by parishioners of the Anglican Church. . The campaign has always received substantial support at Matawai, Motu, Te Araroa and Tokomaru Bay, but returns from Ruatoria and Waimana during recent weeks have been disappointing for such rich rural areas. In all 119 butter coupons, or 59Jlb. of butter, and 6474 meat coupons, or £BO 6s 6d in cash value, were collected throughout the Gisborne postal district last week. Fat collected totalled 431 b.
